JAY CONTINUED his attempts to make Ben feel comfortable by having no-pressure dates. At least that’s what Ben called them. They would go for walks in the park, or Jay would stop over after work and bring them both dinner. Everything was on Ben’s turf, allowing him to set the pace for anything that occurred. For that, Ben was thankful, and he could feel himself becoming more relaxed as a result.

That relaxed state also served as inspiration for Ben’s art. He had increased his sculpting, returning to his studio more often in order to work and actually complete pieces rather than banishing them to the trash because they didn’t feel right. The smooth lines of clay under his fingers soothed him, gave him purpose, and he began to contemplate returning to the art world financially. He had a few completed pieces already, with Darcy serving as his aide to get them fired. Ben might have sought to regain as much of his independence as possible, but he wasn’t stupid. Blind guy plus kiln equaled a very bad idea.

Ben was wrapping up for the day when his cell phone buzzed in his pocket. He finished wiping his hands, then quickly fished out the phone before the caller hung up.

“Hello?” Ben was a little breathless from rushing.

Jay’s rich voice came over the line. “Catch you at a bad time?”

“Nah,” Ben said, smiling. “Was just finishing up, actually. I’m done for the day, so I’m thinking about taking Colt out to the park for some exercise.”

“Sounds good. Actually, I was thinking we could do something later, if you’re up for it.”

“Yeah? What did you have in mind, dinner?”

“Well, yeah,” Jay said, drawing out the words, “but I was thinking about switching it up tonight. How about you come over to my place and I’ll cook for us?”

Ben froze at the suggestion, a rush of panic running through him. “Uh, I don’t know.”

“Please? I can swing by after work and pick you up. It’s not far.”

It wasn’t the commute that Ben was worried about. No, his was more a baseline worry over the fact that he would be venturing into unknown territory. Jay had made sure to keep their dates confined to areas where Ben felt comfortable, where he knew the layouts by heart. Now Jay wanted him to come over to a house he had never seen, probably staying stationary on a couch or chair for fear of embarrassing himself.

“Look, I promise it’ll be okay,” Jay continued when Ben didn’t answer him. “Time alone with each other, and I’ll make you a good meal to boot. How can you say no to that?”

Ben couldn’t, not without coming off as scared or whiny. “I… guess I can’t?”

“Great!” Jay’s voice took on an overly happy tone as he babbled on. “I can get out of here by six if there’s no emergencies, so I can be over to your place by six thirty. How’s that sound?”

“Um, sounds good,” Ben said, trying to conceal the unease he still felt.
